We could not find the software we needed, so we built it.
SmarterPaws was not designed in a conference room. It came out of running a small foster based rescue and needing one lean system that could keep up with the work.
The story
How SmarterPaws started
The start
A rescue, a spreadsheet and a full inbox
We started a small foster based rescue and immediately hit the wall every small rescue hits. Applications arrived through DMs, email and a form nobody was checking. Vet costs lived in a notebook. Foster updates lived in group chats.
The search
Nothing fit
The big shelter systems assumed a building, a staff and a budget we did not have. The cheap tools solved one slice and left the other nine. We tried stitching them together and spent more time maintaining the stitching than placing dogs.
The build
So we built it ourselves
SmarterPaws started as our own operations system. Intake to adoption, fosters to donors, in one dashboard, with automation doing the parts a volunteer should never have to remember.
Today
Open to other rescues
It runs a live rescue every day, which is the only reason we trust it enough to hand it to yours. Every feature exists because the work demanded it, not because it looked good in a pitch.
What we believe
Lean, fast and built for the rescues doing the work
Small rescues deserve real software
Most platforms are priced and designed for organizations with paid staff, a facility and a seven figure budget. Nobody was building for the volunteer running intake from a phone at 11pm.
One system, not ten
Applications, dog records, medical, fosters, contracts, donors. Every one of those lived in a different tool or a different spreadsheet. Putting them in one place is the whole point.
Automate the admin, protect the mission
Every hour spent chasing a form is an hour not spent on a dog. If software can send it, score it, remind someone about it or file it, software should do it.
Where we are headed
Fewer spreadsheets. More dogs home.
Our goal is simple. Take the administrative weight off small rescues so the hours go back to the animals. If that sounds like your rescue, come look around.
